The author calls his book "a popular tale from the future". Set in 2027, Russia has isolated itself from the rest of the world and China has taken economic power over the outside world. Russia has been transformed into a zardom with a ruler, an oppressed people, an all-dominant Russian Orthodox Church and a power elite with unlimited powers. The language is Old Russian, but it's a modern society with Mercedes and all kinds of wireless technology. The book follows one of the power brokers whose everyday life includes murder, rape and robbery in the service of the state.

Opritchnik is the name of one of the paid mercenaries that Ivan the Terrible appointed as his powerful representatives in the mid-16th century. Vladimir Sorokin warns that Russians have never done away with the mentality that supports the division of society into oppressors and oppressed. As a result, Russia is in danger of falling back into a regime that can only rule through violence against its citizens.

Vladimir Sorokin was born in 1955 and trained as an engineer. During the Soviet era until the late 1980s, only a few fragments of his formally experimental and content provocative works could be published. Since then, he has become one of Russia's most widely read and controversial writers. Sorokin is one of the greatest stylists in modern Russian literature. He can do anything with language, say Russian critics.

Sorokin's book is the second volume in Forlaget Vandkunstens series of new Russian novels. The reviewers of the first volume (Aleksej Slapovskij, They are everywhere, May 2009) welcomed the initiative for the new series and looked forward with excitement to the upcoming releases.
