There are anniversaries to celebrate - a confirmation in 1934, a silver wedding anniversary in 1967 and a sixtieth birthday in 2003. It happens in Staun Forsamlingshus for as long as it is there, and then - when everything else has changed - in a large hotel. Through the parties, we follow the two families at Bisgaard and Kristiansminde, but also many of their guests, most of whom are just as keen to adapt to changing times and customs as they are to follow their own desires. Old Søren Godiksen has to watch everything he believed in come to nothing. The sons and daughters of the two farms are each trying to adapt their lives to a new era where very little is a foregone conclusion: the adopted child Axel will take over most of the village; the wild 'girls' Emma and Mary find ways out of the previously fixed but now quite meaningless female roles; their younger brother Peder and his beloved cousin Ellen will appear on the big world stage, as a war hero and as a UN employee. And the next generation has once again fully immersed themselves in today's consumer society. But perhaps, like academic Søren Lundbæk, they are also working to 'understand' all the dramatic changes throughout the 20th century. Mærkedage is both a tragic and hilarious tale of the final dissolution of the old peasant culture in the modern world.
