Nanna's garden is growing over her head. - Finn feels the same way about his hotel's accounts; something doesn't add up. On the outside, the large family has always been on top of things, and on the surface, everything seems neat and tidy. But when the foreign photographer suddenly shows up, the otherwise perfect family begins to crack, and it turns out that the family has been plagued by infidelity, divorce, alcohol abuse and premature death for generations. The central characters are the two half-brothers Hjalmar and Gylfe, a well-known actor and successful hotel owner respectively, and their uncle Finn, an accountant. There is also a cousin of the two brothers, Dui, who lives with his uncle Finn. Gylfe is married to Nanna and together they have an adopted Asian daughter, Senna. Hjalmar is divorced from his wife Asa, with whom he has two children, and currently lives at home with his mother Ingdis. The family has a secret: Gylfe is probably the father of one of his half-brother's children. The plot of the novel is primarily concerned with uncovering this secret. The revelation begins when a male photographer of Algerian-Moroccan origin arrives in Iceland to create a photographic work about the country and its people. In a short prelude, we are told how the same photographer has taken a picture with his cell phone of a blonde couple (Gylfe and Asa) in the Paris metro. Said picture, taken a few months before the photographer's arrival in Iceland, and his contact with the various members of the Icelandic family, ultimately leads to a dramatic revelation. Throughout the novel, the foreign photographer's contact with the various family members causes the individual members to consider their own life situation and their relationship with the other family members. This turns out to be fatal for the family - who are slowly approaching disaster! 'Kantate' is a magnificent and polyphonic family saga where threads are intertwined, spun, twisted and unraveled again. Nature accompanies: The uncontrollable life in Nanna's garden, the trees, the insects, the birds - and then the river, where the salmon leap and the hour of fate takes place.
