Two opposing paradigms are currently setting the tone in the humanities. The first - cognitivism - is based on humans as biological beings, while the second - constructivism - sees humans as primarily socially and historically constructed. These two approaches meet and intersect in today's humanities, and the result is a further development of both the humanities field and the two paradigms. The book describes the background to this development and shows how the discussion is actualized in the fields of language, literature, art and aesthetics as well as film and media. The book is ideal for use in the teaching of philosophy of science, while its interdisciplinary scope makes it useful for courses in analysis and methodology in many different humanities subjects - and finally, it is aimed at anyone with a curiosity to gain insight into the latest trends in the humanities and the connection between these developments and the public debate.
