  • Information
Confucius is China's best-known philosopher, and the ideas expressed in Confucianism have become almost synonymous with traditional Chinese culture. In Collected Conversations, Confucius' students and their students in the centuries after his death have recorded their memories of conversations, the master's statements and observations of his behavior. The Collected Conversations thus stands as the oldest core of Confucianism, and for more than two thousand years, countless Chinese have consulted the work to understand Confucius, themselves and the ideas that have shaped Chinese society throughout the ages. From 1313 to 1905, the text was required reading for future officials at the imperial court.

This edition of the work, which also contains the first biography of Confucius from Sima Qian's Records of the Historian, is translated and annotated by Bent Nielsen, MSc, PhD, Associate Professor of Chinese Civilization and Culture at the University of Copenhagen. His previous publications include A Companion to Yijing Numerology and Cosmology (2003) and with Gimpel & Bailey Creative Spaces (2012).
