Dear Reader
When I started writing my family history series six years ago, my plan was for it to be in three parts, and that's how it was until I was well into writing the part you're holding in your hand right now. But then the characters started going in a different direction than I had anticipated, and there were secondary characters who suddenly started playing roles in the story that I had to include. That's what can happen in the creative process. So now there will be another volume in my family chronicle, which will be called Darkest Before Dawn.
Finn Hviid Bredahl

Excerpt from the book
Before they could sit down at the table, a ship's siren sounded in the darkness.
"What the hell was that, Karl?"
"It sounded like Mechlenburg."
They both looked at the grandfather clock on the dresser.
'That can't be right. She's not due to dock for another three quarters of an hour."
"We'd better check."
Karl grabbed his coat and followed Frode, who had unlocked the door to the forecourt and stepped out into the darkness.
"I think it's her. Why is she coming so early?"
"You'll have to ask her that. If you go down there, I'll get a flashlight and the crank for the bridge flap."
"You'd better. Something's not quite right," Frode replied and walked down towards the quayside.
