The two-time Pulitzer Prize winner is back with an exuberant and wildly entertaining tale of robbery, racketeering and small-time swindlers in early 1960s Harlem.

Carney was law-abiding in the sense that he was not a criminal again …

To the customers and neighbors on 125th street, Carney is a respectable furniture dealer doing his best to provide for himself and his family. He's expecting his second child with his wife Elizabeth, and although her stern parents don't like Carney or his cramped apartment overlooking the highway, it still feels like home.

Only a few people know about his connections to the seedier side of uptown Manhattan, and his facade of normality has more than a few scratches.

Money is tight, so if Freddy, Carney's father, occasionally drops off a necklace or two, Carney doesn't ask where it came from. He knows a discreet jeweler downtown who doesn't ask questions either.

But one day Freddy falls into the clutches of a group of small-time criminals who want to rob the Hotel Theresa, Harlem's answer to the Waldorf Astoria. Things don't quite go according to plan – they rarely do, and suddenly Carney's daily life is populated by gangsters, shady police officers and other suspicious characters, including mob boss Chink Montague.

Harlem Shuffle is a family history disguised as a suspense novel, a space history, a novel about racism and power, and last but not least, a love letter to New York's most famous neighborhood, Harlem.
