This book tells the story of the Home Guard as part of the larger political history of Denmark - sometimes a central part.
The Home Guard is a voluntary, military organization and part of the Danish armed forces. But it is also a popular movement that represents a broad cross-section of the Danish population who, in addition to civilian jobs, receive military training and make themselves available for the defense and for social tasks.
The Home Guard's importance - and general reputation - has changed in line with both changing threats and shifting societal trends. The organization has its roots in the resistance movement that emerged during the occupation of Denmark from 1940 to 1945, which forced a break with the security, foreign and defense policies that had been pursued so far, as well as a mental break with the small state complex. The Home Guard became one of the central organizations of the Cold War, both militarily and politically. Militarily as a central part of the early Cold War preparedness
and in the late Cold War as an increasingly central part of a shrinking Danish defence; politically as a 'frontline organization' in the battle for souls that took place. Since the end of the Cold War, the Home Guard has undergone a radical transformation, under pressure from new threats. In line with the 'internationalization' of the armed forces, the Home Guard has thus gained a new, central role in national crisis and disaster preparedness.
In the book, the whole story is unfolded for the first time by historian Jens Ole Christensen, who is a senior researcher at the Royal Danish Arsenal Museum.
