In the book, the author evocatively and captivatingly describes his childhood and youth in a suburb of Odense in the latter half of the 20th century. This is not a memoir in the traditional sense, where the author lists all his merits and achievements. Instead, it is a depiction of an ordinary life. A life that is similar to the one most of us live, and which the reader is therefore able to mirror and identify with.

Excerpt from the book
I have never had enough intelligence to allow myself to sit back and let things happen. But I developed a self-discipline at a very early age that allowed me to instill a work ethic so high that I considered it a betrayal to myself and those around me if I didn't live up to it with all the diligence I could muster. If I had been just a little more lazy, I would never have reached this point. Had I also been more intelligent, I could have gotten even further - if that in itself had been a goal, which I honestly find hard to see today.
