Højt synger Nattens Dronning is a counterfactual family novel that covers a period of more than 100 years. The counterfactual narrative form covers actual events and real people, which the author builds on and puts into her very own universe that, based on the author's own family history, takes the reader to Czarist Russia, to a gypsy family's departure from Prussia and to Skagen, just before the famous painters really settled in the small market town.

Excerpt from the book
St. Petersburg, May 1880
The Winter Palace did not live up to its name at all, as it lay there in the bright and mild May evening, shining like a three-storey giant lemon yellow layer cake. A cake that had been bitten into, because to the right of the main entrance, a hole from basement to attic marred the overall impression of rigorous order. A flimsy scaffolding was attached to the facade and some kind of renovation was apparently underway.
In a small antechamber on the first floor, Vladimir Alexandrovich stood watching the one hundred and twenty-four guests on their way to the Officers' Ball.
