What does it really mean to be human? In many professional and university programs in the humanities, assumptions about human beings are both the core and the starting point - without it always being made clear what these assumptions cover. We already know what a human being is - we are one ourselves - so why ask about this?
It's not quite that simple, of course. This book poses and uncovers some of the key questions that arise when we want to understand the humanities' assumptions about the human. Questions and wonder are the starting point for the book's search for answers in philosophy, pedagogy, sociology and psychology. The result is not a theoretically coherent answer, but rather a picture of the humanities' complex reservoir of understandings, which can support the reader in further exploration of the subject.
The book comprises ten chapters, each of which revolves around fundamental human themes such as gender, development, learning, work, upbringing, time and faith.
