Albanian humanist and priest Marin Barleti (c. 1460-after 1512) is one of Europe's most important storytellers. His biography of the national hero Gjergj Kastrioti Skanderbeg (1405-68) became an international bestseller, which for centuries inspired epic poems, dramas, operas, etc. The book was also known in Denmark, and it was the basis for Holberg's consideration of Skanderbeg as the greatest hero in world history. Barleti also wrote a moving portrayal of a heroic citizen collective in the small Albanian town of Shkodra, where he himself had grown up. In his time, it was an outpost of the Venetian empire. In 1478, he participated in the defense of the city, which was attacked and besieged by the Ottoman Sultan Mehmed the Conqueror.

Barleti was living as a refugee in Venice when he wrote his great Latin works. Both of his heroic stories are characterized by a painful contradiction between the author's appreciation of Venice's hospitality and his protest against the noble city's attitude to events.
