Mathilde Fibiger (1830-1872) became known at the age of twenty for her reckless debut novel Clara Raphael. Tolv breve (1851), which, with its radical ideas about women's liberation and spiritual awakening, started the famous Clara Raphael feud that would have far-reaching consequences for her later life and writing. In 1854, her last novel, the scandalous Minona, her absolute masterpiece, was published.

H.C. Andersen, in a letter to Ingemann, compares Minona to the feeling of having grasped a strongly scented, poisonous water plant that dissolves slimy and disgusting - not the first or the last time in the eighteenth century that a woman's work is compared to disgusting shrub growth; all in all, a resounding failure, belittled by contemporaries and rendered invisible by posterity; thus ends Fibiger's all too promising writing career, she is 24 years old.

Minona: a wonderful bastard of refined compositional devices, psychological acuity, tragedy, horror, mythology, cold realism and overly romantic style:EVERYTHING is at stake in this grand-scale composition, where incestuous sibling love, loss of innocence, fallen women, freethinkers, passions, fate, devilry and salvation are virtuosically linked in a writing that inexorably churns towards the inevitable.
