"I have been unfaithful to my husband". This is the famous first line of Sigrid Undset's debut novel, Wife Marta Oulie, which is now available in Danish for the first time.

Marta is training to be a teacher when she meets her future husband Otto Oulie and thinks she finds love in his strong and healthy appearance and his upright posture. Marta and Otto get married and eventually have four children together, but Marta's thoughts only revolve around the infidelity she has committed. When Otto falls ill and is on the verge of death, Marta's guilty conscience intensifies, her soul struggles, and the very meaning of life is at stake in the question of fidelity and sin.

Wife Marta Oulie was published in Norway in 1907. At the time, adultery was still a criminal offense, and Undset's novel focusing on a woman's infidelity was therefore very shocking in its time. But Undset doesn't focus on the laws of society, she writes about the individual's responsibility to themselves. People (both men and women) have the right to do as they please, but the consequences of guilt are something you have to live with forever.
