The first volume of the Parallel Lives presents the founders, legislators and shapers of Rome on the one hand and Athens and Sparta on the other. Plutarch delves deep into the many myths surrounding figures such as Romulus and Theseus and gives a vivid insight into how all these contradictory and fantastic stories were dealt with in early modern times. Later, with Solon and Publicola, we find ourselves on more historical ground, but still in a formative period that illustrates the religious and secular institutions that Rome, Sparta and Athens are so famous for.

The title Parallel Lives should be taken literally: Plutarch juxtaposes a Greek and a Roman, pointing out similarities and differences. Plutarch not only writes historical biographies that take us through the history of the classical world like pearls on a string, but also tries to derive moral and philosophical points from the lives.
This volume contains translations by S. Tetens (1800-11), V. Ullmann (1876-90) and K. Hude (1909-32).
