The third volume of Plutarch's Parallel Lives spans a wide range of time and space, but the stories are set in Sparta and Rome. In Sparta, Agis and Kleomenes attempt to rebuild the city according to the old model, but in a completely different time. Their project is shipwrecked, not least because of Philopoimen, who irrevocably subjugates Sparta's power. In Rome, the brothers Tiberius and Gracchus attempt to reform and balance the Republic, which has quickly become a significant power factor throughout the Mediterranean. They are unsuccessful, and in Rome the problems that come to full fruition in the civil wars are nurtured.

The title Parallel Lives should be taken quite literally: Plutarch juxtaposes a Greek and a Roman, pointing out similarities and differences. Plutarch not only writes historical biographies that take us through the history of the classical world like pearls on a string, but also tries to derive moral and philosophical points from the lives.
This volume contains translations by S. P. Cortsen (1878-1943), S. Tetens (1800-11), V. Ullmann (1876-90) and K. Hude (1909-32).
