The Vikings are more popular than ever before because we recognize ourselves in them. Power and Gold - Vikings in the East tells the story of the cultural encounter between the Vikings and the local populations of the Baltic Sea region on the southern Baltic coast, northern Germany and especially the Polish coastline.
The book shows how much influence these early eastern connections had on the development of Scandinavia and the formation of the Danish kingdom at the end of the 10th century. The book's five chapters focus on how cultural exchange took place between the Slavic peoples of the South Baltic, including how they influenced Danish empire building during the Jelling dynasty through intermarriage and trade.
Power and Gold - Vikings in the East is also the first book to present the newly discovered early Viking treasure from Vindelev, which is one of the largest gold finds in Denmark ever.
Power and Gold - Vikings in the East is made in collaboration with Vejlemuseerne in connection with Vejlemuseerne's new exhibition, which opens on April 7. The book is in both Danish and English, so museum visitors from abroad can benefit from it.
Power and Gold - Vikings in the East is edited by Mads Ravn, Head of Research at Vejle Museums and Charlotta Lindblom, Museum Curator at Vejle Museums.
