"Situated Knowledge" (1988) is - next to "A Cyborg Manifesto" (1984) - Donna Haraway's best known and most widely read work. The article has had a major impact on the discussion of what knowledge production, science and objectivity are, and what they can be.
- From Lis Højgaard's foreword to the Danish translation
Through a critique of the concept of objectivity - the god trick of science, where everything is seen from nowhere, without body and context - Haraway wants to reclaim vision as a system of sensing and cognition, now re-embedded in specific practices, situated. Haraway wants to show us that there is no innocent perspective, that what we know is determined by context and situation. Instead, we are encouraged to learn to take responsibility for our knowledge by being open (non-restraining and accepting of the contradictory and paradoxical) to how it is produced.
Situated Knowledge is part of the book series AFTRYK, which collects short and relevant philosophical texts with a significant history of impact. Lis Højgaard has written the introduction to the text, making it relevant for students as well as readers with an interest in science, objectivity and feminism.
