Social constructivism is an influential modern position in the natural, social and human sciences that has also played a significant role in mainstream social debate. This is largely due to social constructivism's critical agenda. This is the claim that certain things or conditions that are usually taken for granted, natural or even necessary, turn out on closer inspection to be man-made. They are essentially produced and maintained by societal thought patterns and practices. This means that we can change these phenomena if we so desire.

The scientific agenda of social constructivism is to uncover the diverse societal interests that sustain the various constructed phenomena and to show how these bear the imprint of their origins. At the same time, it suggests possible alternatives to the prevailing order.
Social constructivism has deep roots in European philosophy, and it is not possible to fully understand its arguments or its purpose without knowing this origin. In this book, Finn Collin outlines the historical background of philosophy and provides a critical review of the central constructivist arguments. He then presents the most important directions and figures of social constructivism. These are the so-called Edinburgh School and its successors, including Bruno Latour, who has mainly dealt with the natural sciences, while constructivism in the human and social sciences is represented by names such as Michel Foucault, Niklas Luhmann, Ernesto Laclau and Chantal Mouffe, as well as critical discourse analysts such as Norman Fairclough.
The book provides a thorough, critical but balanced presentation of social constructivism and its main figures.
