The Heart of the World is a future and contemporary novel about a disintegrating welfare society. Here, the unemployed have become The Useless, eco-capitalism has gained ground, and algorithms have taken over much of the work.
At the center of this world is Mads. He's a freelancer at the online portal Easyjobs, where he proofreads Korean soap ads, edits press releases and does other odd jobs to make ends meet.
Finally, he gets a big assignment: to ghostwrite the thriller Black and White. It becomes a bestseller, but when it comes time to write the second book, the world starts to crumble around him, literally.
The Heart of the World is a chilling novel about artificial intelligence, love and capitalism. A philosophical and humorous story about finding meaning in life in a lonely time.
Viggo Bjerring (b. 1981) made his debut in 2016 with the short story collection Balance Cat. In the same year, he published the short novel QWERTY, which was nominated for the Danish Fiction Writers' Award, Den Svære Toer. The Heart of the World is his first novel, and in 2022 he received the Danish Arts Foundation's three-year work grant.
