The book behind the upcoming exhibition at the David Collection (November 24, 2017 to May 13, 2018) focuses on a rarely discussed topic in Islamic art and presents 75 internationally renowned masterpieces from the David Collection. Despite Islam's opposition to the depiction of humans, the human figure has always played an important role, and the subject has a long and rich tradition, especially in miniature painting. The paintings largely depict princes, but also holy men and ordinary people, both as illustrations for fictional stories, depictions of real events, and actual portraits.

The authors of the book are museum director Kjeld von Folsach and curator Joachim Meyer from the David Collection. After introductory articles on the human figure in Islamic art, its forms and expressions through time, the catalog section relates the human figure to topics such as Ornamentation, Figure and Symbol, Book Illustrations, The Religious Sphere, The Prince and the Court, Love, Women, Everyday Life, and The Stranger. Each section is preceded by an essay, and the 75 works of art are discussed in detail in the catalog texts.
