Tom Buk-Swientytakes the reader on a dramatic journey through the Third Reich in The Lonely Heart. The book is the story of the young German Hans Horn, who during World War II is thrown into Nazi Germany's insane war.

The Lonely Heart is written from Hans Horn's own records. Through his detailed and highly credible memoirs, based on diaries and other contemporary personal sources from the time of the war, and partly with Hans Horn himself as narrator, TomBuk-Swienty unfolds a vast and unusual story of the war in Europe, seen through the eyes of a sensitive and musical man who experienced the political changes and not least the war at first hand.

Hans Horn, scarred for life by the horrors of war, emigrated to Denmark afterwards, where he became a practicing doctor and lived until his death in 1989. It was only at a late age that he was able to put his experiences into words and pictures: he wrote it all down, but also drew and painted all the dramatic and beautiful things he had experienced. When he died, he left behind a colossal, fully illustrated memoir of over 5,000 pages. It is this unique, documentary material that has now found its way to Tom Buk-Swienty via Hans Horn's children.

'I am an insignificant child of the 20th century who unwittingly witnessed many strange, cruel and beautiful events, while all the time I was just trying to survive in one way or another...'

This is how Hans Horn begins his memoirs. And in the same amazing way, he continues his description of growing up in 1930s Germany, the gradual but significant change in the country, the Nazification and later the war and the inevitable call-up to the Wehrmacht. After that, it was all about survival - about wanting to live and trying to maneuver as a German soldier in war-torn Europe, not least surviving the hated Eastern Front. The book is illustrated throughout with Hans Horn's own moving watercolors.
