Karin Michaëlis lived an atypical life for her time as a war reporter and artist. She was famous, spoke in front of large audiences and wrote controversial books on topics such as the role of women and erotic desire.

In the book about Karin Michaëlis, we get to know a multifaceted artist and woman. Born in Randers in 1872, she broke out of her small bourgeois environment at a young age and went to Copenhagen with a strong desire to become a pianist. Throughout her life she wrote more than 50 books, and in 1910 she had her international breakthrough as a writer with the scandalous novel Den farlige alder (The Dangerous Age) about a middle-class woman on the threshold of menopause who leaves her boring husband to realize herself.

Karin Michaëlis’ books were published in more than 20 countries and she was a sought-after speaker in Europe,
until the books were banned in Germany in 1939. She actively participated in relief work during both World War I and World War II, partly in Østrig and partly at Thurø near Svendborg, where she housed a large number of refugees from Nazi Germany and gave shelter to the German playwright Bertolt Brecht, among others. Her aid work and role as a social debater made her a political refugee in the United States in 1939-1946.

In February 2020, BaggårdTeatret in Svendborg will premiere a large musical performance about Karin
Michaëlis. The script is written by Julie Maj Jakobsen, who in 2018 won a Reumert as Playwright of the Year, while Danish singer Katinka, who also performs on stage, has written brand new music for the show. The script and lyrics are part of the book, which also includes excerpts from The Dangerous Age as well as a number of personal essays about Karin Michaëlis and the traces she has left behind.
