Finally, this 1966 classic is available in Danish. It appeals to anyone interested in what knowledge is and how we acquire it.
Polanyi introduces the concept of tacit knowledge, which suggests that we can know more than we can account for. Tacit knowledge must be seen as a crucial part of scientific knowledge and as the basis of our values and judgments. Humans act on the basis of this non-linguistic knowledge. The book has three parts; first an introduction to the concept of tacit knowledge, the distinction between actual tacit knowledge and principled tacit knowledge, then the idea of multiple levels of reality that cannot be reduced up or down, and finally the description of the establishment of a community of discoverers.
"He wants us all to be engaged discoverers in and of our lives. Therein lies his revolutionary potential. Freedom lies in engagement, in making oneself available, in thinking critically about what exists, in spotting a good problem", writes Allan Holmgren in the Danish foreword to the book.
New foreword by Nobel Prize winner Amartya Sen.
MICHAEL POLANYI (1891-1976) was a Hungarian-British polyhistor who made significant theoretical contributions to physical chemistry, economics, philosophy and sociology. Among his most important books are Science, Faith and Society and Personal Knowledge: Towards a Post-Critical Philosophy.
